Yoga is contrary to Christianity and shouldn’t in general be practiced

I posted a blog entry on “What’s so bad about yoga?”, but now I want to share after doing a little bit more research.  This posting is mostly for Christians who are born again believers this will have something that applies to secular people that will benefit from it.  I will try to touch on it from a health perspective as well as correlating it to what the Bible has to say:

One article online says that doing yoga may increase GABA levels in the brain.  GABA is the brain’s neurotransmitter which can have affects on the moods in the brain.  Knowing that I have a history of bipolar disorder, and I know what I am talking about, you don’t want to get involved in anything that can affect your brain chemistry.  If you’re too high in GABA it’s dangerous and if you’re too low it’s dangerous too.  On one end of the spectrum there’s mania, and on the other end of the spectrum there’s depression, and once those things have been altered they can effect people from generations.  Usually people use Yoga to treat depression or as a stress reliever.  There are definitely other ways that are more beneficial and much less dangerous physically, mentally, and spiritually then doing yoga.  For most depression with Vitamin D and a right amount of sunlight, your moods can be uplifted that’s why when it’s raining you sometimes feel tired and sluggish.  There are better ways to exercise if you so choose like weight training and cardio.  There are much more health benefits for those.    Most people use for relaxation, but when you know that Jesus loved you and He died for you and you’re going to spend eternity with Him, the best thing you can do is to “Be still and Know that He is God.”

But believers have a wonderful resource available to them and that is worship. Anointed Worship can also bring you into the place where you triumph no matter what you “feel” like because we are not determined by our circumstances. The Word of God if you mutter it over and over again in your heart can bring you to that place of joy because you know you have Jesus and what joy can that bring?  What better stress reliever is there in resting in knowing that Jesus loves you no matter what you do?  One of the things that He doesn’t like is when you let other things take the place of Him in your life, and if yoga has become your idol, and the very act of yoga is a form that denotes idol worship and any form of idolatry is a blasphemy to God.  Especially those that come from other religions.

Romans 1 says:

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

There are poses: Cow, Scorpion, Snake, Locust, Camel, Cat, Dog, Fish, Eagle, etc.  These are apply as “birds, four footed animals and creeping things.”  As far as locusts go – they are generally not a good thing – the Bible says God will restore what the locust has eaten sevenfold and all throughout prophetic Scriptures there is symbology of locusts as being very dangerous.  They are ok for eating, well at least in Biblical times.  They had to eat what they could get.

1 Corinthians 6:19 says:

1Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Although it is talking about sexual immorality here in context, it can be referred to as applying it to whatever deeds you do in the body do to the glory of God.

1 Timothy 4:8 says:

For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.

This is a warning for the Church that bodily exercise is ok, but what is more important is godliness.

Yoga is primarily a New Age or Hindu practice- there’s nothing new about it.

Ecclesiastes 1:9-11 says:

That which has been is what will be,
That which is done is what will be done,
And there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Is there anything of which it may be said,
“See, this is new”?
It has already been in ancient times before us.
11 There is no remembrance of former things,
Nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come
By those who will come after.

Ecclesiastes 12 says:

13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter:

Fear God and keep His commandments,
For this is man’s all.
14 For God will bring every work into judgment,
Including every secret thing,
Whether good or evil.

The commandment is love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself.   If you love God will you have another idol take His place?

There is a threat for Generational curses when it comes to yoga:

you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

The Ten Commandments are still applicable today, but Jesus added on alluding that sin begins in the heart.

Hosea 4:6

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
Because you have rejected knowledge,
I also will reject you from being priest for Me;
Because you have forgotten the law of your God,
I also will forget your children.

Since we’re under the New Covenant, the new Law is to love God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as you love yourself and all of the Ten Commandments are the expression of that law.

Genesis 3 says

3 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’”

Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Again yoga means to be “yoked” and the Bible says that we are not to be yoked together with unbelievers, and Jesus says His yoke is easy and His burden is light.  Jesus never asked anyone to do yoga, but do the things He said in the Scriptures to follow Him.  According to hindu beliefs yoga means to be yoked to the “creator” whose name is not Elohim, and according to the story of hindu creation everything began in the eye of a snake.  What does that symbolize?  I am hoping and pleading that you sincerely change your mind about yoga.  Not only for my benefit, but for yours as well.  As it says in Ephesians, when one member in the body of Christ is hurting they are all hurting.

According to the American Academy of Orthapaedic Surgeons – repeated exercise can do damage to shoulders, back, spine, knees, leg

If you look up the Consequences of doing yoga you’ll find a site on the Dangers of Yoga which has a lot more information.  Also you might want to get in touch with Caryl Maristricana (back track to previous post)

So for Christians, we all have a Cross to bear, so the question to ask is what is more important – the love of Jesus, or doing something that is an abomination to Him.  Our eyes, bodies, and hearts should be on seeking Him, and not on worldly things.  If you are in pain, then God has a way out.  By His Stripes we were already healed.  This body is only temporary, so in the great scheme of things it is really not going to profit you at all from doing yoga…but are you seeking God?
